Top 5 New Opportunities With Satellite TV

For half a century television has been a fixture of American homes. It has become so common and so taken for granted that we all too often fail to appreciate it for the fantastical innovation that it is. It has changed the face of the world, spurring global connectedness and providing a flow of programming that never stops for even one second. With more and more variety in programs, and better and better technology available, TVs can be used in many ways that may never occur to the average viewer.

First, think about what kind of TV watcher you are. Do you have it habitually on for background noise? Do you tune in to weekly sit-coms or dramas? Do you mainly use it for watching sports? Whatever your answer, you should realize that it has so much more to offer. Consider these 5 ways in which your satellite television could be better used:

Music - Using your satellite TV more doesn't have to involve watching it more, instead use it as your main music system. With songs of every genre playing at all hours of the day, there will always be something you are itching to listen to. Put that ritzy sound system to good use and rock out.

Language Skills - Have you forgotten most of the Spanish you learned in high school? Watching television is one of the best ways to tune your skills. Find a telenovela, a news show, or some other program that will keep you so riveted you won't want to miss a word, and your skills are sure to improve in no time at all. Depending on your satellite TV package, you are likely to also be able to find shows in French, German, maybe even Hindi, Urdu, or Arabic. Use your TV as a tutor and bone up on your foreign language abilities.

Family Time - You should carefully monitor what your children watch and limit the time they spend in front of the TV each day, but that doesn't have to mean total deprivation. Watching a regular program or setting aside time for a weekly movie can be a great way to gather your busy family all in one place to enjoy quality time together. You can regale your kids with stories about how you didn't have high definition when you were little.

NFL Sunday Ticket - If you are a die-hard football fan, don't settle for watching just whatever game happens to be broadcast on any given Sunday, instead take advantage of the ingenious NFL Sunday Ticket package deal, which allows access to just about any game outside your local media market. Be a better, and a better-informed, fan.

Cooking - While the Iron Chef can't be beat for culinary entertainment, you aren't likely to learn many usable techniques from watching the masters at work. However, there are many excellent cooking shows that will provide you with some genuine kitchen inspiration and expertise. Spice up your TV watching as well as your meals!

These are just a few ideas for how to make your TV work as a more positive force in your life. With a little creativity, I'm sure you will think up many more!

Crazy Careers on Satellite TV

What ever happened to being a lion tamer or shark wrangler? A rocket designer or a chocolate taster? Those careers were among my many ambitions as a child, but somewhere along the way I guess they stopped seeming realistic to me. But as I flip through the stations on my satellite TV, I am happily reminded that there are still a lot of wild careers in this world. There are the inventors who made my plasma HD TV possible, and the artists who make the logos for television stations. There are shows about scientists and travelers, ice-climbers and deep-sea divers. Some of the wildest careers are even featured with their very own programs. These shows are good no matter how you watch them, but I like to watch them as career guides and imagine what life would be like in one of these professions:

Crocodile Hunter - Sure this fast-paced nature show is dominated by the charismatic Steve Irwin, and he paid for his adventurous career with his life, dying in 2006 as the result of a stingray's barb -- but imagine what life must be like as a crocodile hunter! The HD close-ups are jaw-dropping on my TV screen, but they must be even more thrilling in real life. Irwin scoured swamps, deserts, and every other imaginable corner of the earth in search of fascinating creatures. Sounds like a pretty good life to me.

Iron Chef - I think I would be happy to have any career that was preceded by "iron." Just think - the Iron Pilot, the Iron Salesman - it lends such a mysterious je ne sais quoi to just about any title. That being said, being a chef has never looked so good as it does with these iron experts. I think most of us aim for bare competency in the kitchen, so having the skills to concoct gourmet creations out of any ingredient - in a timed, competitive atmosphere, no less - is itself a dream. This is one of the best shows there is on satellite TV.

American Idol - The appeal of this career is pretty obvious by how popular the show has been since it first appeared. Who doesn't want to be the king of rock and roll or the queen of soul? Imagine filling out the forms at the DMV and when you come to job title you get to write "Idol of the American people." Too bad it takes a whole lot of natural singing and dancing talent (and the ability to still look good in high definition) to get this job.

American Inventor - It might not have the same sex and glamour appeal as being an idol, but I think being an American inventor sounds just as good. The word inventor brings to mind crazy gadgets and Rube Goldberg machines with lots of pulleys and gears. To some extent that's exactly the kind of project that gets proposed on this reality TV show, though other inventions are simple and streamlined. I'm not sure what I would invent, but I think if I could, I would go back in time and invent the NFL Sunday Ticket myself.

Find yourself a new dream career on satellite TV. Who knows, if you come up with something new and wild enough, maybe you can get your own show one day!

Choosing Satellite TV Offers

When investigating satellite TV you need the right equipment to receive the signal. Even if you switch satellite services, you need new equipment. This is because each satellite company has a different signal and needs the right dish to recognize its signal.

A small satellite dish can be installed to pick up the signal. The signal is sent to the receiver by a coaxial cable. The signal is decoded and sent by coaxial cable to the TV.

The video signal starts out from a broadcast that is encrypted and sent to an orbiting satellite via a MPEG-4 compressed signal. The dish on your roof captures that signal and sends it to your receiver along a coaxial cable. The receiver than unscrambles the coded signal with the proper algorithm so that only those with proper access get to view it.

The most common type of satellite orbit is the geostationary orbit. Because of the velocity of the satellite and the perfect balance between the gravitation force due to the earth's pull, the satellite maintains a stationary orbit.

A new oval, slightly larger super dish is available for even more enhanced reception and it is called fittingly, SuperDish. It allows you to receive signals from different satellite locations so you get even more programming.

HDTV stands for high definition television and has twice the amount of pixels than the old analog TV signal. The signal is usually 1280x720 pixels. The two types of HD broadcast are: 720p - 1280x720 pixels progressive, 1080i - 1920x1080 pixels interlaced. The difference is that 1080i gives clearer slow motion imagery while the 720p gives better imagery for fast action such as basketball, NASCAR and such.

There are a lot of options when it comes to digital television reception. Cable companies have been known to raise rates while the satellite companies generally don't raise rates. Also, satellite allows for more diversified programming and channel selection.

Broadcast companies have different channels and different cost structures. There are the cable companies and there are two main satellite TV companies, Dish Network and DirecTV.

Why Satellite TV is Right For You

You're sitting in front of your TV, pushing the channel button on the remote. There's nothing on worth watching. You continue to flip past channels and find that you come to the end of the list in a very short time. If you had more channels, there would be more to watch. You've heard people at work talking about their favorite shows, like The United States of Tara, Dexter and the Tudors. You may have even thought about watching them, only to discover that you don't have the channel the show comes on. This is a common situation with cable TV.

Another common situation with cable TV is sticker shock when the monthly bill comes in. You're paying how much money per month for that lack of channels? Why are you doing it? If you were to ditch your cable provider and make the switch to satellite, you would be able to avoid a wide range of problems. Why is satellite TV the right choice for your needs? What does it have to offer that cable companies do not?

First, satellite TV offers you far more channels - more than 250, in fact. This includes top movie channels, music channels, sports and educational channels, pay-per-view movie channels and exclusive channels that you won't find with any other provider. Therefore, one of the first things that satellite TV offers you is a better selection of entertainment. Do you love sports? Perhaps comedies are your thing. Maybe you prefer dramas or documentaries? Regardless of what type of programming you love, you'll find it in spades with satellite providers and not at all with the local cable company.

What else does satellite TV bring to the table? Remember the "sticker shock" factor? Satellite TV gives you access to all those channels for less than you might be paying for the boring cable programming you currently have. Yes, you can get more channels, better programming and more entertainment for fewer dollars each month. Cable starts to sound pretty pathetic, doesn't it?

Beyond the number of channels available and the better financial outlook, satellite TV brings much more to the table. Satellite providers are the best option if you love high definition TV. Cable companies might offer 60 HD channels, but satellite providers have more than 100 and that number keeps increasing (while the cable company stagnates). Of course, you'll also find other things to love about satellite. Their dedication to providing the best in sports programming is the stuff of legend. Who hasn't heard of Mega March Madness or the NFL Sunday Ticket? Top those two incredible options off with MLS DirectKick, NHL Center Ice, NASCAR HotPass and Cricket Ticket (not to mention the other options) and you have any type of sports enjoyment you could possibly want. Try getting your cable company to match that offer!

As you can see, satellite TV is the best option for your enjoyment, your savings and more; cable companies suck you dry - get TV that gives back!

The Race to Digital Television

During the summer of 2009, over the air broadcasters are slated to discontinue their analog broadcast signals and move over to digital. Already, the two biggest subscription services, cable and satellite, offer digital-format broadcasting. This conversion promises great improvements. Digital broadcasts generally offer better quality signals and more features than analog signals while consuming less bandwidth. They also require some specific technology to receive which is part of the reason behind the delay in adoption.

Originally, congress had mandated that regular broadcast television was to switch from analog to an exclusively digital format in February of 2009. An ailing economy and consumer's reluctance to spend money upgrading entertainment equipment during such a time caused lawmakers to move the deadline back to June of 2009. Most broadcasters, however, are already broadcasting in digital while maintaining their analog broadcasts for the use of those without a converter box or a digital television. Cable and satellite subscribers have had access to digital broadcasts for some time, however.

Digital format broadcasts are, essentially, more compact than their analog equivalents. As an example of this, over the air broadcasters are now carrying several different versions of their channels instead of just one. On subscription services, customers have become accustomed to choosing between literally hundreds of channels with features such as interactive menus, stats tracking for sports broadcasts and view-on-demand selections. These features are made possible by digital broadcasting. Such a high amount of content on an analog broadcast would consume enormous bandwidth resources and be very expensive for both provider and consumers.

Between the two main competitors, cable and satellite, satellite has generally offered more digital content than has cable. Satellite added many services without charging their customers, such as screen-within-screen technology, the ability to monitor one program in various ways while watching another and menu-driven programmable recording; all of these features owing to digital technology. Digital cable has been offered for some time now, but it's selections have generally been narrower and the price higher, relative to satellite.

Digital broadcasting also opens up the door to high-definition broadcasts. These broadcasts, when viewed over a compatible television, offer much greater clarity than analog televisions. It's still possible to see side-by-side comparisons in electronics stores but, as this technology is adopted on a broader scale, it's likely that those comparisons will become unnecessary in the near future. HDTV is already well on its way to displacing older formats.

Satellite currently offers more broadcasts in HD format than does cable and those selections generally cover a broader array of programming. Sports is one of the most popular types of programming to make available in HD as are movies, of course. Satellite began actively promoting itself based on the number of HD programs it broadcasts. As the price of HD televisions has dropped over the last few months, more customers have purchased the sets and the service which offers the most programming in that format. It is currently a market advantage for satellite.

For the Love of Football Sunday

The NFL Sunday Ticket provides a rare occasion in which sitting around a TV set and staring intently stirs up so much excitement and encourages an environment of companionship and sociability. This rare sort of circumstance seems to be a unique product of the sports culture, something that only televised sports has the ability to elicit. No other example epitomizes the phenomenon better than the pairing of football and American men. Sundays are waste days anyway. Unless a person is a Christian or serious about brunches, watching football seems to be the one and only alternative. If the path to be followed is one down the latter, then the first day of the week begins -- albeit a late start, since everyone sleeps in on the weekends -- by a visit to the store. Here takes place the purchasing of the necessary supplies: chips, dip, and beer (unless you are in a state that does not permit the sale of alcohol on Sundays, in which case the beer run needs to be done the day before). Before or during the trip, phone calls are made to the guy pals to check in with everyone and confirm whose couch everyone is going to park on for the afternoon.

As people arrive in the living room of choice, the bags of chips are torn open, bottle caps popped off, and eyes peeled to the figures on the TV lining up and crashing into each other along the yard lines. The viewing experience is made all the more preferable if the screen is wide, flat, and in high definition, which means that if someone among the group owns a TV that meets these criteria, chances are that's the living room where they sit. There's typically not a whole lot of conversation going on; people may be tired from a late Saturday night but, more importantly, they simply want to sit back and take in the game. The company provides a more or less wordless companionship, aside from snippets of commentary about what's happening on the field and the occasional personal anecdote on the week's shenanigans. But of course there are also those moments of collective raw excitement: spasmodic banging on tables, leaping out of seats, and shouting at the tops of lungs in reaction to the team's highs and lows. It is these moments that electrify, or at least jolt out of a daydream, any nonbeliever that happens to be in the room.

It is in this uncomplicated way that the ritual of the NFL Sunday Ticket makes for a pleasantly lazy and yet energy-charged afternoon, spent with the best people to be lazy and act crazily with. To close the weekend -- or to start the week, depending on your view -- this sort of football afternoon could be the best relief.

Cheapest DirecTV Or Dish Network Satellite TV Deals

In this article I will explain the details of how you can get a really good deal on satellite television service, but first I need to explain a couple of options you may, or may not have known about. I'll also tell you these are the cheapest ways to get satellite TV, and that's not an exaggeration. I would even stake my reputation on the fact.

Satellite TV Standalone or Bundled
Satellite TV is still generally less expensive than cable, if even slightly, but there are a couple ways to get satellite TV that can save you a little more money depending on whether you want bundled services, or you prefer to just get satellite television as a standalone product. With bundled services you may be able to add phone and high-speed Internet to your package, and get a discount for having everything on one bill. With stand alone satellite you may be able to get a discount for a specified number of months.

Dish Network Options
Not too long ago you could get Dish Network from AT&T, which included phone service and DSL. Recently AT&T changed its satellite TV provider, and now offers DirecTV. On the flip side of this, Dish Network now offers its own brand of DSL and phone service, but it's not widely available just yet. This year Dish Network has also started a very aggressive campaign to increase its customer base by offering programming for $9.99 for six months.

Now, before you get all defensive about that price only being for six months, don't forget that's half of one year, and the programming only goes up to $34.99 after the promotion has ended. That's still cheaper than cable for a comparable package. This also requires a commitment, but that's the case with any bundled package deal at a discounted rate.

DirecTV Options
The largest provider of satellite television in the United States is DirecTV, and they have contracts with the largest telecommunications companies in the United States. AT&T, Verizon, and Qwest all offer DirecTV with home phone, wireless phone, and DSL or high-speed Internet all on the same bill. You do get a discount for having everything bundled together, but package prices can be different depending on the levels of phone service, speed of Internet, and the number of channels and features you choose for DirecTV. Getting the DirecTV bundled package makes good economical sense if you're using or planning to use any of the other services mentioned anyway, since you'll get a discount.

DirecTV as a standalone product is also a good option, and if you're a first time customer you can get a good discount for programming for the first year. Promotional packages start at $34.99 for 150 channels. Though cheaper than cable, it's still about the same price, as the Dish Network package that is $9.99 for the first six months, then goes up to around $35.

Dish Network vs DirecTV
It's pretty easy to see that Dish Network will cost considerably less than DirecTV as a standalone product, but where DirecTV really shines is when it is bundled through one of the major phone companies at a discounted rate, which makes it a viable alternative to lowering the cost of your overall elective utilities based on an average monthly cost. There is no clear winner here since it depends on your personal preferences, but the information provided here will hopefully give you some insight as to which plan will be cheapest for you.
